FOREMAST Project holds first General Assembly in Ghent

The FOREMAST project successfully held its first General Assembly on January 29–30, 2025, in Ghent, Belgium, bringing together key partners and experts to discuss the latest advancements in Small Flexible Automated Zero-emissions (SFAZ) vessels and their role in modern logistics. The meeting was kindly hosted by Ghent University and Training Center Wood & Construction (OHB) who also provided a demonstration of the AVATAR vessel on the second day.

Key Highlights of the General Assembly

Engaging Discussions on Work Packages (WPs) and Future Roadmap:
The first day featured updates and workshops on the project’s major work packages, covering research and innovation in SFAZ solution components, automated logistics chains, vessel design, and project coordination. These sessions provided valuable insights into the progress made so far and the next steps needed to bring SFAZ technology closer to real-world application. A presentation on NEAC automation further demonstrated how advanced technology is reshaping navigation and vessel operations. The event concluded with a discussion on key takeaways and upcoming milestones for the project.

Live Demonstrations and Testing:
On the second day, participants witnessed a live test sail of the AVATAR vessel, remotely controlled by Seafar Remote Control Center.

The partners were able to sail on one of the the two vessels and experience several practical and operational tests in LL1 including remote control sailing and mooring, platooning, collision avoid test and object recognition.  This demonstration showcased the potential of automated vessels in inland waterways. Additionally, experts discussed a digital twinning prototype, highlighting how virtual simulations can enhance vessel design and operation.

The FOREMAST General Assembly reinforced the project’s commitment to sustainable, efficient, and automated maritime transport solutions. With strong collaboration among partners, the project is on track to revolutionize inland waterway logistics with cutting-edge SFAZ technology.
